Despicable Me - Review

I think everyone knows about Despicable Me and our cool yellow friend the Minions. Six years ago the hype around the yellow fellas started and I think we all are very happy about it.

It all started with the first movie Despicable Me, where the bad guy Gru tried to steal the moon with his minions. On his way to steal the moon he had a lot of obstacles on his way there. Especially Vector, another bad guy.
During this time Gru even tried to make an impression with three little girls to get what he wants by simple adopting them.

Does Gru get what he wants? And what about the thre sweet girls? We won't spoiler. You may / probably know it already. :-)

I guess we are all glad that Illumination Entertainment had the great idea with the yellow minions and their special language they are speaking which is a mix from spanish, italian and maybe french.
But the funny thing about it: we can almost always understand what they are saying. We could even make our own langage out of it.

Fans of the minions can be very lucky because there is even a second part of Despicable Me to see more fun with Gru and his fellas.
And if that is not enough, there is a movie that is only about the minions and how they found their master Gru which means this story was before the two movies of Despicable Me. You should definitely watch this movie before the other two film just to understand the background of the whole story better.

We hope you will still enjoy the minions in the future and watch all three movie as often as you can and want, for example here :-) (Beware: it is in german and not the best quality.)

Little Lord Fauntleroy (1936) - Review

Today I want to tell you about a sweet little movie called Little Lord Fauntleroy from 1936.

The story is about a little boy called Ceddie, who lost his father at a very young age. He lives with his mother (he calls her Dearest) and a befriended midwife named Mary in New York. His best friends are Dick, a shoeshine boy, Mr. Hobbs who owns a shop and the applelady.
He has a happy life with people around, that loves him very much.

One day the little boy and his mother get a visit from a lawyer called Mr. Havisham from his grandfather from the father's side who is actually an Earl in England. Totally overwhelmed by his emotions that he is going to be an Earl he is moving with Dearest and Mary to England. He is very sad that he won't see his friends anymore, but knows that they will always write to each other.

Unfortunately Ceddie doesn't know that his grandfather is an grumpy old man who doesn't like anyone (maybe except his lawyer Mr. Havisham) and so comes that the elderly man doesn't even want Ceddie's mother in the same building because he thinks she is only a person who wants money and whatsoever. That means she will live close to the castle in a beautiful house, where she can always see her son, when he comes over.

After he arrived at his grandfathers home everyone starts to like the little boy. Even after some time the Earl starts to like him and changes slowly into a nicer person.

One day there is a lady who claims to have the real next Earl of Dorincourt and says the other boy is just fake.
But is she right? Is Ceddie not the true Earl of Dorincourt? Watch the movie and find out for yourself.
You won't regret it :-)

This movie is one of seven film adaption that come out so far. The book wrote Frances Hodgson Burnett (1886). The version of 1936 is so far the most famous and I have to admit that I like this version the most. But there is another movie adaption of the book from 1980 that is shown every year around christmas time on television which puts the version of 1936 way in the back. I think it is a little bad even though the latest version is good but the one from 1936 is my favourite because of all its charme and charisma.

But I think everyone should make a picture of their own of both movies from 1936 and 1980 to say which on is better. I am voting for the one from 1936. See for yourself :-)

You are interested to watch the movie from 1936 right away? Then you will find it here in english or here in german. I hope you will enjoy it :-)

The Birdcage - Review

Some may know this film, some don't. But this is my favourite movie from all Robin Williams movies there is.

The story is about two gay men called Armand and Albert who loves each other and runs a night club called the Birdcage.
One day Armands son Val (son of Armand and Katherine, one-night-stand before Armand turned gay) comes home and tells him he met a girl and wants to marry her. At first his father was a little mad because he didn't want to let his only child marry in such a young age (of around 20), but after a father and son moment he is happy for his boy.

On the next day Val tells his father that the parents of his girlfriend are into politics and are nominated for being senator (the father of his girlfriend).
The tricky thing behind is that her parents are very conservative and don't think out of their box and don't want to know anything about gay people or different religions and so on.

And there the troubles begins: They have to hide that Val's father is actually gay and owns a gay club.

How it ends? You should make yourself a picture of that movie, because it is a really lovely film and so much to laugh, that your mouth will hurt from too much laughing :-)

This little movie is one of the finest films with Robin Williams, that I really love. Even if there are a lot of great movies with him, this one is in my heart forever, because of it's own sweet charme.
Even if the main topic behind the movie disappears a little bit in the background because of all the humor, it is still a fantastic movie.

I hope you will watch it and enjoy it as I always do! :-)

Hinterholz 8 - Review

It is time again for an austrian movie that everyone in Austria knows and everyone else should know about:

Hinterholz 8

The movie is about the family Krcal that lives in a little apartment right next to a doctor, which costs a lot of trouble from the beginning because all the patients think that the family wants to be first to see the doctor.
One day Herbert Krcal decides to buy a house for his small family and finds the perfect place. But after the first happy moments they find out that the place costs too much money which they don't have.

Fortunately on another day they find a sweet little house close to a forest while they went out for a walk.
Herbert is so excited about it that he rushes to talk to the mayor of this little town. From the start Herbert and mostly his wife Margit and kid feel uneasy because all the people seem weird.
After some small troubles the family gets the house. But it is only the beginning of many problems...

Hinterholz 8 is one of the most famous movies that came from Austria and Harald Sicheritz.
Sicheritz already did a lot of great movies and series for Austria which I am really glad about. His best works are: Hinterholz 8, MA 2412, Kaisermühlen Blues or even Muttertag (Mothers Day).

Even today he makes good work with Vorstadtweiber (similiar to Desperate Housewifes).

The movie Hinterholz 8 was a great success for him and all the actors. It is quite funny to watch what can happen if you buy a house and try to redecorate it by yourself. So many mistakes are happening that wouldn't happen, if you let someone professional do your house.

So lean back, turn on the movie and enjoy a lot of laughter and tears of laughing :-)

Some like it hot - Review

Today I want write about a very funny movie that everone knows about:

Some like it hot

It is about two musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Gerald (Jack Lemmon) who witnessed a murder committed by a Mafia. After they run away successfully they had to find out how they can get away without being caught by this Mafia.
The idea of dressing up as women and get in a train with a womens orchestra which was first dropped by the two friends turned out to be a very interesting idea after all.

So the adventure starts. We see a lot of fun and a man who falls in love with Daphne who was actually Gerald. While Joe was just playing a woman, Gerald actually "falls" in love with his admirer.
What happens with them and the Mafia when they met again!?

Find out and watch the movie if you haven't seen it yet.

The movie alltogether was made brilliant from no one else than Billy Wilder. He was not only famous for some like it hot, but also for The Seven Year Itch and Avanti!

A must see for every Billy Wilder fan and fans of classic movies and of course Marilyn Monroe or else.

The human Centipede - Review

WARNING: Not for people who doesn't like disgusting movies!

The human Centipede is about Dr. Heiter (Dieter Laser) who worked as a doctor that seperated Siamese twins from each other. The weird thing about Doctor Heiter?
Well, if you first meet him, he seems a little odd, but the really strange thing about him is that he wants to do impossible surgical interventions...

What that means exactly? I don't want to spoiler too much,... But if you already read the title of this movie, you may imagine what he is going to do. He wants to create a human centipede. This idea is so disturbing, that you may not watch the movie to the end.
In one way it is very interesting how he is doing it, but on the other side it was made even more disgusting.

So it is up to you, if you want to watch the movie or not.

The director of this movie Tom Six wanted to do a film that is disturbing and provocative at the same time which he accomplished with that project. He also said that all good horror movies got r rated or even being shorted because of scenes that are really ugly, so he wanted to do a movie which wouldn't be banned from the authority.
The bad thing about it is that almost no one knows about this great movie.

I think that should be changed, only because of the idea Tom Six created. I have never seen anything like it and I can only say that everyone who loves horror movies should see the film. It has some pretty nice effects and the better thing about it that there are two more movies of the human centipede. It even gets more disturbing!

So beware of Tom Six and Dr. Heiter's idea :-)

Charleys Aunt (1963) - Review

After some pretty nice reviews about american movies, I want to write about an austrian film called "Charleys Aunt" with the famous Peter Alexander who sadly died already in February 2011 in the age of 85.

The story is about Dr. Otto Wilder (Peter Alexander) who dresses up as a woman to help out his younger brother Ralf Wilder (Alfred Böhm) getting attention of a beautiful young lady. But it is not that easy as it sounds:

On a party that the younger brother and his friend are organising, the father/uncle of their dates are showing up and interfere in their celebration. And if that is not enough, the "real" aunt of Charley shows up and is suprised that she is already there.
Well, she is not really there per se, because Otto is there to help out as "Charleys aunt".

How it ends? I don't want to spoiler and find out for yourself.

This sweet little movie is one of the most famous movies coming from Austria. The film splitted the critics, because some of them said, it would look ridiculous to see a man who's 6"1 (1,85 cm) tall and dressed up in womens clothes.
Others said that it has it's own charmes and makes the audience laugh.

In my opinion I say it is a really nice and funny movie to watch that everyone should see at least once.
Otherwise Metropol Theaters wouldn't have started an own musical with this story.

The story was originally from Brandon Thomas and got already a movie before this one, but I say the version with Peter Alexander is the more funnier film to watch.
So make yourself a picture of that movie and hopefully you will like it and get a little bit more in touch with Austria and Vienna and the culture...

The Mummy - Review

When speaking of classic movies, there's no doubt that action adventure horror film "The Mummy" cannot be left out of the conversation. Most people are familiar with The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Kevin J. O'Connor but in actual fact, it was a loose remake of the 1932 film "The Mummy" which starred Boris Karloff in the title role. No one knew there was going to be a remake 67 years later written and directed by Stephen Sommers with Arnold Vosloo in the title role as the reanimated mummy.

The thought of remaking the film began in 1992 with James Jacks & Sean Daniel deciding to update it for the 1990s with the help of Universal Studios. The difficulty was that they would only be given the go ahead if they kept the budget around $10 million. They recruited several filmmakers with different ideas attempting to stay on budget and come up with a great script at the same time but this proved to be a challenge.

Finally, Jacks & Daniels were contacted in 1997 by Stephen Sommers with his vision of The Mummy and likened it to Jason and the Argonauts. He said the idea was inspired by the likes of Indiana Jones and wanted to recreate the things he liked as a child on a much bigger scale. It had been 4 years since he had wanted to film The Mummy but the people he needed to work with had to be focused elsewhere. He was given the opportunity to make his vision become a reality after Universal like his idea to the point that they increased his budget from $15 million to $80 million. This also came at a time when Babe: Pig in the City had failed to make an impact in the box office so the studio decided to revisit it's successful franchises from the 1930s.

Filming took place in Marrakech, Morocco in the year of 1998 and lasted seventeen weeks. During filming in the Sahara, the cast and crew endured dehydration, sandstorms and also snakes which most of them had never experienced before.
The Mummy debuted in cinemas on the 7th of May 1999, and grossed $43 million in 3,210 theaters during it's opening weekend in the United States alone and $416 million worldwide. The film exceeded most expectations leading to numerous sequels, spin-offs, video games and accolades including The BMI Film Awards & Saturn Awards.
After watching the film, it will become understandable why it was such a challenge to make the movie. If the movie turns out to be your taste, you'll be glad to find out that it has a 2nd and a 3rd installment to fill your appetite.

Jeepers Creepers (2001) - Review

It's not very common for a song to be made into a movie but for "Jeepers Creepers", this was the case. "Jeepers Creepers" is a popular 1938 song written by Harry Warren & the lyrics by Johnny Mercer, for the 1938 Warner Brothers movie "Going Places". The song would then go on to be featured in the 2001 horror movie "Jeepers Creepers" starring Gina Philips & Justin Long as the main characters.
The film was shot in Florida in the summer of 2000, written & directed by Victor Salva with a budget of $10 million. Opening in 2,944 theatres, Jeepers Creepers grossed $37,904,175 domestically and went on to gross $21,313,614 internationally, making a total of $59,217,789.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, the movie was nevertheless a financial success as it broke the highest ever Labor Day weekend gross in America.

The movie begins with Trish and Darry Jenner (played by Gina Philips & Justin Long) travelling home from college for spring break. Whilst driving through Florida's countryside, an old, rusty truck tries to run them off the road before eventually passing them. Later on, they see the same truck next to an abandoned church with a man sliding what seems to be a body wrapped in bloodstained sheets into a large pipe sticking out of the ground.
The man sees Trish & Darry watching him so he pursuits them in an attempt to run them off the road a second time.

There's a huge catalog of great horror movies but Jeepers Creepers is one of the few with one of the most exhilarating starts as described in the above paragraph. Although some critics argued that the tension and suspence quickly deflated into genre cliches, the film is still worth spending 91 minutes on your time.

The Transporter (2002) - Review

Which movie comes to mind when you hear the name Jason Statham? Some will say Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrells, while other say The Expendables alongside Sylvester Stallone & Jet Li but most will remember him playing the lead role of Frank Martin in the action thriller film, The Transporter as the Transporter himself.
The Transporter is a 3 part movie which was given a reboot in 2015 with Ed Skrein replacing Jason Statham as the original Frank Martin. We rewind back to 2002 when we were introduced to the first installment directed by Louis Leterrier & Corey Yuen & written by Luc Besson. As a real life martial artist, the movie proved to be a perfect fit for Jason Statham as he made the role his own.

Living by a life of rules and valuing discipline, Frank Martin is a retired mercenary who now works freelance as a transporter. He is a highly skilled driver who transports anything and anywhere with no questions asked. He never accepts a deal unless the other party is willing to play by his rules which also makes him the best in the business let alone being always on time. He has three main rules which are:

Rule Number 1: "Once the deal is made, it is final", Rule Number 2: "No names", Rule Number 3: "Never open the package".

The film begins with Frank having to transport some robbers from a bank heist. On the day of the job, the robbers happen to have an extra man in their team which they had not mentioned to Frank so in return he refuses to drive until, with no option, the leader kills one of the his men. After a successful getaway, they offer Frank more & more to drive them further away from the city but he refuses, sticking to rule number 1 so the robbers part ways with Frank & escape with another car.

The intro itself signals that it won't be a typical action thriller, which gives a lot of curiosities, one of the most interesting being wether Frank will stick to all his rules throughout the film. A lot of surprises should be expected as well as a lot of fight scences. The film was cut in order to receive a PG-13 rating in the United States, and the same version was also released in the United Kingdom and several other countries.
Certain sequences of violence were either cut or toned down for the PG-13 cut. Receiving the uncut versions were France & Japan. Starring alongside Jason Statham are Shu Qi, François Berléand & Matt Schulze. The movie premiered in approximately 2,753 theaters, with a production budget of $21,000.000. It grossed $25,296.447 in the United States and a total of $43,928.932 worldwide with the film scoring 53% based on reviews from 126 critics on Rotten Tomatoes and garnering a rating of 5.6 out of 10.
The DVD version was released a year later on 23 October 2003.
